presumably racket sports are also ball sports

I can't speak for the creator but I imagine racket sports was used as Badminton then becomes a decent red herring.

Red herrings are great, if they are chosen such that there are no other combinations of the given clues such that all the same groups could be satisfied with a different organisation of the clues.
