One group should have liked 'synonyms' - quite good apart from that

I'm OK with everything apart from the brake in the golf group. What does break have to do with golf? Was it deliberate to have a complete (and more) group which did not in fact exist? I refer to Brake, Whole, Gripe, Raged and Hold. All of them still form words if you remove the first letter. I spent ages trying to figure out which one was not in the "group".
