"Swan" is obscure, because the normal word for a "swanling" is a "cygnet". I was sure the connection was going to be that they could be preceded by "black".

Very easy but swanling is just plain obscure. Cygnet is from the French "cygne"- swan and is the accepted word for a young swan. "-ling" is a Germanic form and should be the correct ending to match the German word "Schwan"- swan but it is so rare that I have never heard it.
